Burley, New Forest
Manor Magic in the New Forest
Where ancient woodland, wandering deer and a touch of old witchcraft conspire to make you stay just one more night.
Tucked into the heart of the ancient New Forest, Burley Manor is the kind of country retreat that feels as though it has always been there, quietly waiting for you to arrive. The honey-stoned manor house carries genuine character, its grounds rolling out toward a deer sanctuary that offers the sort of views you might otherwise have to earn with a long walk. Families in particular will find themselves quite undone by the charms of the place — New Forest ponies wandering the lanes beyond the gates, and a sense of wildness that feels both safe and genuinely thrilling.
The Sunday lunch here has earned its reputation, drawing guests and locals alike to settle in for a proper roast with all the warmth and ceremony the occasion deserves. It is the sort of meal that makes you slow down, order another glass, and rather lose track of the afternoon — which is, of course, entirely the point.
Burley itself adds a delicious layer of intrigue. The village has long been associated with witchcraft and folklore, and come Halloween the whole area leans wonderfully into its reputation with a parade that delights children and adults in equal measure. Burley Manor channels this spirit with just enough atmosphere to feel enchanting without ever tipping into kitsch. Mid-range in price, it punches well above its weight in character and memory-making.

What They Say
“I’m normally a difficult customer to please but we had a fab stay, lunch and drinks here. Great service with a particular mention of the wine list, some great wines to be had (thank you Gio). We loved the room with the deep bath. Our beautiful dog was well looked after.”
“We had a really lovely stay overall. The manor house and grounds are absolutely stunning, and the location by the deer park was beautiful. Seeing the deer from our bedroom felt very special and perfect for just before Christmas. Our room was large, quiet and comfortable, and we slept well. While the room was nice, it definitely could have used some TLC and wasn’t quite as polished as the photos on the website. Breakfast was enjoyable, though a few of the cooked dishes felt a bit rushed. We also really appreciated how kind and efficient the team were in posting the couple of items of clothing my husband had forgotten in the room — it was arranged very quickly, which we were grateful for. We stayed via a special deal, so it was much better value for money.”
“A tired hotel which needs a lot of money spent on it, in particular the lighting! All the rooms are too dark to read in. Staff friendly but unprofessional and no attention to detail . A DIY continental breakfast but a good choice. Comfortable beds and plenty of hot water.”
“We had our Wedding day here on 10th December. We had some reservations after reading previous reviews but as new management had taken over and I just knew this venue was perfect, we went for it. We are so happy with our choice. Since having Kim as our coordinator - she is down to earth, knowledgable and accommodated all our requests to make our day truly special. Nothing was too much trouble! She did as much as possible including fluffing my dress and ensuring all the details were correct, having several meetings before. On the day - the venue and settings are beautiful, there were lots of Christmas decorations already up which helped to make our vision come to life. The barns are rustic and all connected so weather is less of an issue and good for those with accessibility issues - all pretty much on flat level apart from a couple of steps. The bridal suite is spacious and comfortable, enough for getting ready plus suppliers! We saw deer, Guinea fowl and other animals outside! The staff on during the day - waiters/bar staff - hardworking, smiling the whole day and helpful. I got some of their names - Charlie, Jess and Sam, plus the coordinator during the evening Alex. Food was ‘some of the best wedding food I’ve tasted’ from our guests - all cooked so well and all dietary issues accomodated for. We had pork belly for starters (could have been slightly crisper but that is being picky), the short rib was so tender and flavourful, delicious. Sticky toffee pudding was also sooo good! Canapés and evening food also great - only downside was the pulled pork rolls were slightly under filled for our liking! Drinks are standard wedding venue prices but no one waited too long at the bar. We stayed for 3 nights total to extend our wedding bliss. We stayed in the deer hut which is so cosy, comfortable bed, lovely aesthetics and will definately stay again. Breakfast each morning - quality, fresh and delicious. Staff working in the restaurant were also very friendly and helpful including Ellie. Overall we had such a special time and are so glad we chose Burley Manor for our wedding day. Everyone honestly worked so hard to make us feel like the most important people and we can’t wait to go back to reminisce!”
“Lovely place to stay. Right next to a deer park, with lovely views across the countryside. Rooms are spacious, comfortable furniture and Cody bed. Staff are all friendly, courteous and helpful. Good selection of excellent food. Short walk from the Manor into Burley, where you'll find quirky shops selling witches potions and spells”
