Margate's Beloved Beachside Bolthole
A refurbished seaside institution where salty air and easy charm go hand in hand.
Fort Road has long been woven into the fabric of Margate's story, and its thoughtful refurbishment has only deepened that connection. Sitting just a sandy stride from the beach, this mid-range hotel strikes the kind of balance that seaside towns do best — unpretentious yet considered, familiar yet freshly imagined. The renovation has breathed new life into a beloved local institution without stripping away the character that made it worth saving in the first place.
For families making the pilgrimage to Margate — whether drawn by the Turner Contemporary, the celebrated sands, or simply the timeless pull of a proper British seaside escape — Fort Road offers a genuinely welcoming base. The proximity to the beach means mornings can begin with bare feet on sand before the crowds arrive, and evenings can end with that particular salt-air contentment that no spa treatment can quite replicate.
Margate itself is having a cultural moment, and Fort Road sits right at the heart of it. This is the kind of place that understands its town and its guests in equal measure — a hotel that earns its place not through extravagance, but through warmth, good positioning, and the rare quality of feeling exactly right for where it is. Book it before the secret spreads further.

What They Say
“Me and my girlfriend stayed over night for a quick staycation. The hotel was absolutely perfect the room was lovely with a massive bath and shower. The breakfast was the best form of a hotel buffet with good quality ham cheese croissants aswell as home made granola good yoghurt etc. there’s a guest entrance that makes it convinient and the location is very close to the old town as well as the turner museum and best restaurant in Margate.”
“Will be going here again. Nice room over looking the sea on 2 sides with big bay window, view of Gormley man. Recommend going up to roof terrace. Top view. But the main thing was its so relaxed. Unfussy but quality. Nice art around, old postcards of area. Had lovely sea bass and different wine by carafe. It was a monday night.. staff were great and very helpful.”
“Excellent hotel. Everything is well laid out and perfectly furnished from the elegant bathrooms to the welcoming rooms. Even the stairs are perfect with their quality wooden flooring. The whole building has a good feel to it. All the staff were superb. Warm, welcoming and helpful. The voucher for a cocktail in the basement bar was a delightful surprise. The basement bar with its Saturday DJ may be catering for the younger generation, but it was great fun, even for us with only few grey hairs left. Again the bar staff were spot on. An excellent hotel. If I ever have to stay in Margate again, then 100% the Fort Road Hotel would be my immediate number 1 choice.”
“An exceptional hotel. Great location. Very helpful and attentive staff. Lovely spread for breakfast. Will come back again.”
“What a lovely little gem. Beds are amazing. Cute little treat when u arrive as well. Breakfast was amazing and enough, fresh ingredients!! My dream is to someday run a hotel/bnb and it would def look and feel a lot like this one. The staff were so accommodating as well. We loved everyone working there. If you’re a light sleeper, there are earplugs in the room as well.”
