Fittleworth, West Sussex
Old England, Perfectly Preserved
Where Sussex hospitality has been perfected over seven centuries.
Tucked into the rolling folds of the South Downs, the Swan Inn in Fittleworth is the kind of place that makes you wonder why you ever bothered with a passport. This beautifully restored 14th-century coaching inn wears its centuries lightly — all big beds, roll-top baths, and wallpaper so divine it deserves its own Instagram account. Twelve thoughtfully appointed ensuite rooms offer a genuinely tranquil retreat, drawing a pleasingly eclectic crowd of couples, weekenders, and day-trippers spilling over from nearby Petworth House.
The food and drink alone justify the journey. Traditional local ales sit alongside world-class wines and a growing roster of craft ciders and perries, while the kitchen keeps things excitingly seasonal — meats and game from local farms, fish landed daily on the Sussex coast. It's the sort of menu that changes with the landscape outside, which is exactly as it should be.
This is mid-range pricing with a decidedly high-end soul. Whether you're here to walk the Downs, explore Petworth's antique shops, or simply sink into a fireside pint and refuse to leave, the Swan Inn delivers that rare alchemy of old-world charm and modern comfort. Book a room with a roll-top bath. You'll thank yourself on Sunday morning.

What They Say
“We have just had a wonderful three nights at the Swan. It was supposed to be two but we added an extra night as we did not want to leave. Beautifully renovated, it somehow manages to combine being a village pub with an excellent restaurant and lovely hotel rooms. In the bar there is decent selection of good, well priced beer, and a selection of wine from good value to top end. They will also make an excellent cocktail - a proper martini for example. The food in the restaurant was a super tasty mixture of classic dishes that were all done exceptionally well. All a good size too - you definitely wont leave feeling hungry. With a sommelier on hand too you will also be able to choose well from a varied wine list (we had a variety at different price points and all were good). The rooms are super comfortable while being rustic - home from home, and the breakfast included is lovely. If you are somehow hungry you can feast on a huge cooked breakfast. Possibly the biggest I have had, with excellent sausages, thick bacon slices and black pudding. Service was excellent throughout our stay - it is a very well run inn, and needs to be to cater for all the guests they have on what seems a near constant basis. We will be back!”
“After reading so many positive reviews we decided to try lunch in the restaurant. We had high expectations and were not disappointed. Laid back but effecient and professional service. The restaurant and bar have a lovely relaxed atmosphere and the menu though not extensive is interesting. Good draught beers and wines by the bottle or glass. Food was excellent. I had a piping hot fish pie, followed by chocolate mousse which was delicious. Highly recommended.”
“Had an absolutely fantastic stay at the Swan Inn. The rooms are beautiful. Breakfast in the barn was amazing with a large continental selection (smoked salmon, ham, cheese, an egg boiler and Bloody Marys included)! Dinner on our first night which was fab too. We were always greeted with a smile and staff were friendly and attentive throughout. 100% recommend”
“The holy trinity of hospitality features Food, atmosphere and service and the Swan was terribly close to achieving full marks across the board. The menu choice and layout was perfect and the choices we made certainly did not disappoint. Food 10/10 The atmosphere / ambience was inviting and welcoming. The extensive refurbishment has yielded a marvellous outcome. Sympathetic to the pubs history and position, the interiors are both practical, beautiful and comfortable. Atmosphere / Ambiance 10/10 I think we got unlucky with our waitress. We booked a table for the last seating, 9pm. When we arrived we were told that our table was not ready. No problem, they are busy and we were happy to wait in the bar. Once our waitress informed us the table was ready we were taken through and seated at a fantastic table. All good so far! My advice to all, don’t book a late table at the Swan. We were rushed in every way possible. Our waitress was rude, dismissive and made us feel like we were not welcome for the entirely of our stay. Our drink order was incorrect and her reaction was to say, “we must have run out of what you had last time, you get what you get” while turning her back on us and walking away. I was so incensed I called her back to the table to explain how rude she was being but she seemed not to care in any way! It is important to say that all the other staff were first class and the pub should In no way be judged by the actions of one employee. Service 5/10 All in all a good experience but it would have been much more memorable if we were treated like valued guests by our waitress.”
“This is an outstanding pub with rooms. Choose nos 11 or 12 and you will get a lovely split level room with a sitting room and a courtyard garden. Beautiful and thoughtfully furnished. The breakfast barn likewise is outstanding with the most generous continental breakfast offering of fruit, yoghurt, cold meat, cheese, delicious bread & boiled eggs. If desired there is an optional extra of cooked breakfast offerings. Lunch and dinner are available in the lovely pub. The staff are very welcoming. The only downside is that it is not easily accessible if steps are a problem.”
