The Cavendish in Baslow, Peak District — Pub-turned-Hotel

Baslow, Peak District

History, Hills and Three Rosettes

Where Chatsworth's grandeur meets Derbyshire's finest table.

Perched on the edge of the Chatsworth Estate in the rolling heart of the Peak District, The Cavendish Hotel is one of those rare finds that manages to feel both utterly rooted in its landscape and quietly, confidently brilliant. A former pub with 500 years of community history behind it, the hotel has undergone a top-to-toe reinvention — designed by the gifted Nicola Harding, whose interiors draw directly from Chatsworth's own art collection, family photographs and local craftspeople. The result is 28 rooms that feel genuinely curated rather than decorated, with locally woven organic cotton linens, glazed ceramic lamps made by members of the Chatsworth team, and works by artists including Elisabeth Frink and Jeremy Deller adorning the walls. It is, as The Times put it, 'an arty escape where the food's as good as the views' — and that is saying something.

The food, it must be said, is the beating heart of The Cavendish. Three AA Rosettes and a headline-worthy 10-mile tasting menu — sourced almost entirely from within a ten-mile radius of the hotel — signal serious culinary intent without a trace of pretension. This is Peak District produce celebrated at its very best: seasonal, considered and deeply tied to the land just outside the dining room windows. Whether you linger over afternoon tea in the bar lounge or surrender yourself to the full chef's menu, eating here feels like an event worth building a trip around.

For walkers arriving mud-booted from the Dales, Chatsworth devotees keen to be steps from one of England's great houses, or foodies in search of a destination dining experience with a proper bed upstairs, The Cavendish delivers with quiet authority. Named Hotel of the Year by The Times and The Sunday Times for 2025, it sits comfortably in that sweet spot between accessible and aspirational — a mid-range price tag that punches well above its weight. Book the tasting menu, pull on your boots the next morning, and count yourself fortunate.

What They Say

The Cavendish Hotel is only a 28-minute walk to the famous Chatsworth House through green grassland, and the walk is quite pleasant. We stayed for one night in late December. The furniture in the room was a bit old, and Room 7 was quite cold. The receptionist and the housekeeper kindly changed our room to Room 1. Also chair was broken, but it was quickly replaced. We had lovely dinner at the one-star Michelin restaurant, "The Gallery". The food was superbly cooked. The Derbyshire beef was very tender, and the chips were crispy.A decent three course meal with good flavor and nice presentation. Highly recommended.

Afternoon Tea as a present from our sons and their families for Christmas. It was absolutely superb, the ambiance and service was top notch, something to be envied. My wife is pre diabetic and needed low sugar everything, and the chef came up trumps with everything she could eat and more, magnificent underplays the enjoyment and service we received, it was superb, so nice it’s now on our list to go back, a very well done and a place to just enjoy with thanks.

We were transferred to this hotel when our original booking (The Hide) had a problem. We received a significant upgrade at no extra cost which was much appreciated. The hotel was excellent, with brilliant staff who were all most friendly and helpful. Breakfast was first class with nothing too much trouble. Lovely cosy room with wonderful views across the countryside. Am ideal location for visiting Chatsworth house (which was also excellent). Highly recommended.

We had an amazing time at the Cavendish Hotel. The food was exceptional, the service was excellent. All of the staff made us feel extremely welcome and nothing was too much trouble. Sometimes they went above and beyond the standard service. The location is beautiful and so peaceful. I would highly recommend the Cavendish to anyone wanting to have a break away where you can relax and get in touch with nature, whilst enjoying all that the Cavendish has to offer. Thank you for making our stay such an enjoyable and memorable experience.

I recently stayed at this beautiful quaint hotel near the historic Chatsworth House and Gardens, and it was absolutely delightful. The atmosphere is so full of charm! It is so cozy, quiet, and filled with character. You can feel the history of the area from the moment you arrive. The rooms were beautifully kept, with thoughtful touches that made the stay feel personal and warm. Try the Chatsworth shortbread cookies, they are delicious! The Cavendish is the perfect place to unwind after exploring the nearby historic sites, hiking or strolling through the local charming towns. The staff were welcoming and attentive, always ready with local recommendations - especially Stephen who was extremely nice and very helpful. The setting is so peaceful. If you’re looking for a relaxing, charming stay near history and hospitality, this is the place to be.
