Yarmouth, Isle of Wight
History, Salt Air and Solent Charm
Where 17th-century grandeur meets barefoot beachside bliss on the Isle of Wight.
Tucked between castle and pier on the sun-dappled harbour front of Yarmouth, The George is one of those rare finds that feels both utterly grand and entirely unhurried. This 17th-century townhouse — once the residence of Sir Robert Holmes, who thought nothing of entertaining King Charles II within these very walls — wears its history lightly, pairing centuries of character with the kind of easy coastal warmth that makes you want to linger well past checkout. The Solent glitters just beyond the terrace, and with rooms from a snug £125 a night including breakfast, it punches admirably above its mid-range price point.
The real revelation is the beachfront garden: an Italian-inspired retreat of ancient olive trees and a driftwood-clad beach bar where alfresco dining feels less like a meal and more like a memory in the making. The conservatory restaurant has guests returning again and again — the food, by all accounts, is genuinely exceptional — and for those who like to arrive in style, the hotel's own 32-foot motorboat, G-Dogg, whisks guests across from Lymington in private, sun-sprayed splendour.
For families craving a proper seaside escape, The George hits every note. Prestige rooms with private terraces offer uninterrupted Solent views, while the bustling harbour town of Yarmouth provides all the ice creams, boat trips and bracing walks a family could wish for. Getting here is part of the adventure — train to Lymington, ferry across the Solent, and suddenly London feels a very long way away indeed. Quite frankly, that is precisely the point.

What They Say
“I have been visiting this hotel for over twenty years. It has the most stunning location and a history that dates back for centuries. Currently, the hotel is on the up. Nicole and her team are extending a very warm and personal welcome. The food is of a good standard and the wine list satisfies discerning customers. The latest improvement is the world class cocktail list!”
“What a lovely surprise. We weren’t expecting such a great stay. The staff were wonderful, from reception to housekeeping. The shower power was insane (great!) and the food was also very good, both breakfast and evening meal. We had 3 rooms and all loved our time here. Also Yarmouth was really quaint! Ours was one of 3 rooms allowing dogs - the room was a little tired but bed was comfy and all very clean, so not really an issue.”
“Lovely sea view from the garden. Makes you feel like your abroad. But this is the Isle of white and one of them gems you need to experience with lovely sea views, welcoming staff and a good waiter service. The staff are very polite and attentive to your needs. You won't find many places like this with great views and great service this part of the country. Will definitely be returning. And those reviews of expensive it's not expensive for this location. It actually normal price. Thank you The George”
“The staff was Lovely even with an clopen shift! Amazing. We stayed in the separate room for 6 and everything was as described except the fireplace but the rest of it made it up. Breakfast and dinner, what can I say. Every plate was empty even the children one’s. Drinks at the fireplace, also a must do ;-)”
“Restaurant review only as we were not staying at the hotel. We had an incredible meal on Saturday night (9th August). Probably the best main course (shared lamb) in decades and beautiful deserts all served by the delightful Nina.”
