Shaftesbury, Dorset
Where Georgian Elegance Meets Dorset Soul
A hilltop inn that makes history feel like home.
Perched atop one of Dorset's most dramatic hilltop towns, The Grosvenor Arms is that rare find: a property where history and contemporary comfort conspire to create something truly special. The inn's bones stretch back to medieval times, yet step inside and you'll discover 17 individually designed bedrooms where vintage furniture meets contemporary décor in perfect, considered harmony. Rates from £87 make this one of the most compelling value propositions in the south of England — proof that understated luxury need not demand an extravagant outlay.
Shaftesbury itself is reward enough for the journey — ancient, windswept, and utterly cinematic — but The Grosvenor Arms gives you every reason to linger indoors too. The AA rosette-awarded kitchen turns out seasonal menus of quiet ambition, best enjoyed in the light-filled conservatory or on the terrace when Dorset's skies permit. As dusk falls, the wood-burning bar beckons with the kind of easy warmth that feels entirely unforced, the sort of atmosphere that can only belong to a place with centuries of welcome written into its walls.
For couples seeking a romantic escape, history enthusiasts hungry for authentic character, or simply those who believe that beauty and affordability need not be mutually exclusive, The Grosvenor Arms delivers with uncommon grace. Book a room, order something seasonal, and let Shaftesbury work its slow, medieval magic upon you.

What They Say
“We came for a night away with friends to celebrate a birthday, it is such a lovely place to stay and eat. The rooms are beautiful, super comfortable beds and lots of nice touches. We had dinner in the restaurant, the menu was so good it was hard to choose and the food was really well presented, delicious and also great value. But more than all of that, the service is what made the stay exceptional. All the staff were attentive, a special mention to Josh who went above and beyond to make sure we had a fantastic stay. Definitely recommend, will certainly come back and looking forward to trying out some of the other locations too.”
“Used the restaurant recently for a big birthday and again, a light meal. The young guy who is the manager there is excellent - put our party in the end 'library' as he recalled our request. Maintained warm efficiency and sense of humour. More latterly found us a table for an early dinner despite being fully booked. A credit to the hotel as are the lovely, helpful waitresses. The food was great too. A credit to the town.”
“We had a lovely stay the hotel was spotless as was the rooms. The food was amazing only slight grumble is that to get service when checking you stand around like a lost sheep and then we had to wander looking for someone .maybe a bell would be good !but the dinner meal was as stated fantastic complements to the s Chefs but every time we wanted a drink we have to go and find someone to get someone to take our order we have to again try and find someone .would have been all 5 stars if just the table and reception service could be a be better .”
“The staff went over and beyond to make our stay comfortable. The breakfast offered everything anyone could want and the nice touches like homemade jam. The towel were soft. The only down side which was my issue was the traffic outside- only because I live in the country with no traffic so it did wake me up.”
“Had lunch on Monday in the bar. Last time it was excellent, but today was not good. I know they were busy, but making customers queue up every time they want to order something, is a poor deal, especially when the system for serving customers was so chaotic and I had to stand for over ten minutes. The hot smoked trout had seen better days - small, hard and over smoked - the focaccia bread was cold and stale and the duck rillette was tasteless. The arancini were okay, but didn't taste of much. We ordered coffee - again a long queue and after at least 10 minutes, when the bar seemed deserted, I waited and eventually someone came back and said rather harshly that we were next. By then they had forgotten my coffee order preference, so I gave up. Another queue to pay at the bar. I hope eating in the restaurant is less exhausting, but surely three amiable waitresses should be able to cope with everyone's drinks orders, taking the bar food orders and people in the bar paying.”
