The Newt in Somerset in Bruton, Somerset — Country Estate

Bruton, Somerset

England's Most Enchanting Estate Escape

Where orchard mists, world-class gardens and Michelin-touched feasts conspire to make Somerset feel like the centre of the world.

There are country house hotels, and then there is The Newt in Somerset — a working estate near Bruton that has quietly, convincingly redefined what a British staycation can be. Spread across acres of Somerset farmland, cyder orchards and woodland, this is a place that rewards the curious: wander the world-class gardens, peer into the ancient cyder press, browse the farm shop laden with estate-grown produce, or simply surrender to the rhythm of the seasons from the comfort of your beautifully appointed room. A Michelin Key award speaks to the culinary ambition here, with multiple restaurants drawing on the estate's own harvests to deliver food that tastes, quite literally, of the land beneath your feet.

For couples seeking something more meaningful than a weekend of box sets, The Newt offers a rare kind of luxury — one rooted in nature rather than mere opulence. The spa provides the perfect counterpoint to long garden walks, while the daily programme of estate activities ensures that even the most restless of guests will find their pace. Whether you are decanting a bottle of the estate's own cyder by a fire or breathing in the mist rising off the Somerset hills at dawn, the sense of being somewhere genuinely special never quite leaves you.

The Newt is not simply a hotel; it is an argument — a beautifully made, utterly persuasive argument — for staying closer to home. Few properties anywhere in England can match its combination of horticultural drama, gastronomic seriousness and pastoral romance. Book a room, clear the diary, and prepare to wonder why you ever boarded a plane.

What They Say

From the moment you arrive at the quaint Shepherds hut until you drive away the service levels are second to none. The hotel is beautiful and so well designed. Public rooms are gorgeous and so comfortable and the rooms spacious and wonderfully furnished. We were in room 1 which was huge and had gorgeous views across the grounds. Complimentary self drive golf buggies (they will chauffeur you if you wish) get you around. The restaurants were first class and we eat the first night in the Botanical Rooms. Service was exceptional and food superb. The second night was in Farmyard Kitchen which is a little more than casual but equally as good. All the way through we met so many staff that were so keen to make our stay memorable. This is so encouraging and shows that senior management really do care about their colleagues. We have been lucky to stay at some of the best hotels throughout the world and The Newt is second to none. We will return!

Visited The Newt today with my wife and our two young kids, and we had a brilliant day out. It wasn’t busy at all, which made the whole experience really relaxed and peaceful. The weather was a bit lousy with some rain, but it didn’t spoil anything, if anythin, it added to the calm atmosphere. The kids were absolutely thrilled when we spotted some deer, which was definitely the highlight for them. The gardens and grounds are beautifully kept, and there’s plenty of space to explore without feeling hurried. Staff were friendly and welcoming, and the food and drink were great (a little pricey, but you can taste the quality). We were gifted a membership, and after today we’ll definitely be making the most of it. To be honest, we’ll probably renew it next year, it was that good. A fantastic family day out, and we’re already looking forward to our next visit.

Great place to visit and stay. The service is amazing and staff are always super helpful. The grounds are amazing and you can take a short or long walk around. Dear wondering around freely. Roman villa is amazing then the children enjoy exploring this. There is lots of activities to do around the calendar and they out on plenty for the children and families to enjoy for special events. The food is amazing and caters for all.

We had a wonderful two night stay for our anniversary. The setting is beautiful. Service excellent. And as there are only about 40 rooms it never feels too busy. We stayed in a Stable Loft room (Farrier) which was spacious with lounge, wood burning stove, free standing bath by the bed, separate bathroom with shower and was tastefully furnished. Food at both the Farmhouse kitchen and main restaurant was exquisite. We were blessed with sunshine, the grounds were stunning and the spa with outdoor whirlpool and cold plunge was delightful. My suggestions for improvement would be the bar - beautiful room but with uncomfortable furniture and a cold feel - chairs felt like garden furniture. No avocado at breakfast and not enough newspapers, Otherwise 10/10, would recommend

Absolutely stunning setting. Fabulous spa treatments- although very expensive £208 for a 45 minute massage. Food is interesting, varied, in season and delicious. So much to do Roman Villa is a must, gardens are inspiring and so beautifully kept and you can drive round the estate in a golf cart. Staff are so friendly and super helpful. I guess you get what you pay for.
