Drink at Britain's Highest Pub
The Story
At 1,732 feet above sea level, the Tan Hill Inn is Britain's highest pub — and it has rooms. On the Pennine Way and the Coast to Coast path, it's a legendary stop for walkers. The atmosphere is wonderfully remote, the beer is well-kept, and winter storms add drama.

What they say
“Tan Hill Inn is an absolute must visit place if you are in the UK. It is the highest pub in the UK. The staff are friendly, helpful and the food is wonderful. I stayed overnight on a Thursday and there was free entertainment from a group. It made the experience even better than I could have imagined. Definitely go there if you can. There was snow up there from previous days falls. The drive up was stunning scenery.”
“Our inaugural visit to the Tan Hill Inn was truly exceptional. Upon arrival, we were greeted by an incredibly friendly and welcoming staff, which immediately made us feel comfortable and settled. The room was presented brilliantly, exuding a warm, familial ambiance, and was both cozy and impeccably clean. Staff members were readily available to address any inquiries or concerns we had. The restaurant was exceptionally well-appointed, and the bar staff were highly informative regarding food choices and available options. The bar staff were brilliant and ensured we felt welcome. I wholeheartedly recommend the Tan Hill Inn. 5*****”
“We had a lovely overnight stay plus breakfast and dinner at Tan Hill. The journey in itself is absolutely breathtaking to the pub, and this atmosphere continued once we arrived. The staff are all very down to earth but professional, and despite being a busy day, were attentive and helpful. The pub is comforting with real log fires and very comfortable chairs and lighting. We were very impressed by the range of beers, whiskies, wines and spirits available and the staff were very knowledgeable. Food was hearty and tasty - with generous portions. The overnight stay was also extremely cosy - with a fire in the room, as well as extremely comfortable beds and sofa. Despite being up so high, you did not feel at all buffeted by the elements. Instead we got the best of both worlds with brilliant views of the surroundings. As it is a remote place, this does come with the need to have generators etc, but this adds to the charm! Only downside is you will of course hear some noises that you wouldn't normally but we still had a lovely stay and meals!”
“Doesn't get better in terms of location. It's stunning. We ventured up in our camper, you don't need to book, just turn up and pay £10 at the bar, this is donated to charity. Loads of space. There's a shower and toilet facilities for camper users. Food is amazing and everyone working there is so welcoming. Open fire is beautiful and very much needed as you are so high up it's cold! We spoke to people who were staying in the rooms they have and they said they were amazing too. We will be regular visitors in 2026.”
“Exactly as you would imagine it. But if you want to eat you seriously need to book as tables get filled very quickly. I didn't eat as I'd had breakfast at our hotel by my husband had soup and was very satisfied! I can just imagine the bar and other rooms around it full of people dancing, listening to the band's or are on a lock in because of the weather lol....you can see by the surrounding area that once the snow starts to fall it will settle and turn the place into a house arrest situation lol....you have to visit this pub, it's well worth the drive as the scenery is England ai it's best!”
