Where the Garden Feeds the Soul
Honey-hued Georgian grandeur meets kitchen-to-table magic in the heart of the Cotswolds.
Tucked into the quintessential village of Barnsley, just four miles from Cirencester, The PIG-in the Cotswolds is one of those rare places that makes you want to slow down the moment you arrive. The Grade II-listed, 17th-century country house glows with that unmistakable Cotswolds warmth, its honey-hued stone framed by the extraordinary Arts and Crafts gardens of legendary British designer Rosemary Verey — complete with a laburnum walk, knot garden and a rather charming Tuscan temple that feels entirely at home here.
The kitchen garden is the beating heart of it all. The PIG's celebrated 25-mile menu is a love letter to the surrounding countryside, with produce plucked fresh from the walled kitchen garden and supplemented by a tight-knit circle of local Cotswolds suppliers. Dining in the restaurant, with Verey's original garden creations framed in the windows beyond your table, is the kind of experience that reminds you why food and place are inseparable. Order generously, linger long.
For couples seeking a restorative escape or food lovers chasing something genuinely rooted in its landscape, this is as good as a British staycation gets. Between meals, lose yourself along quiet country lanes, explore the cobbled streets of Burford or Bibury, or surrender entirely to the Fieldhouse Spa — a tranquil woodland retreat with a hydro-pool gazing out over endless rolling fields. The PIG doesn't try to dazzle you with excess. It simply, and rather brilliantly, delivers the countryside at its most delicious.

What They Say
“I sent the below back in August after a stay. I did it privately allowing them the opportunity to respond, but over three months later they haven’t: My wife and I stayed with you for a couple of nights last weekend. Overall, as we have at every other Pig we’ve stayed at, we had a good time. There were a couple of incidents, however, that felt us being a bit let down. - My wife was gifted a voucher by my parents earlier this year. We put it towards a massage my wife had on Monday. For some reason - I assume because the price has gone up at some stage since the voucher was purchased - we were charged an extra £5 at checkout for the treatment. This was pretty petty to include on the bill. - At dinner on our first night (where we were celebrating our 2nd wedding anniversary) we ordered a scotch egg for starter and a mozzarella dish, these arrived at which point the waitress said the chef had dropped half of the scotch egg it on the floor. Instead of preparing a new one, or offering an alternative dish if they had run out, the waitress said she would only charge us 50%, which is rather inexplicable and we were neither happy about having 1/4 of a scotch egg each nor paying 50% for it. - Same dinner, I ordered two scoops of sorbet for dessert. I only got one, but we were charged for two. All relatively minor incidents and any one of them we would likely ignore, but for all to happen was well below the standards we expect from a Pig hotel.”
“Very impressed with my stay. Cozy, warm, luxury- my bedding was Devine- I slept so so well! The food was seasonal and delicious, the staff were really friendly and helpful, and the spa was perfect. I particularly loved the outdoor fire and the full body massage was probably the best I’ve ever had!”
“Spa visit only as was staying elsewhere for a wedding. The staff, lovely, welcoming and the even managed to squeeze us in for a treatment last minute. The massage was great, really enjoyed it. The actual facilities though were a bit disappointing. Outdoor pool was quite shallow, sauna and steam room tiny, and the hair dryer and moisturiser were missing from the men’s changing room, so I had to ask for a replacement as nobody had noticed.”
“We lunched at The Pig on New Year’s Eve. This was a 3-star service in a 5-star location charging 5-star prices. The following details are indicative: - we arrived in good time but were hurried straight into the restaurant on arrival with no-one offering to take coats or a drink before lunch; accordingly, coats left hung over backs of our chairs in the restaurant - vegetables served and charged for separately, but no serving spoons provided - inadequate table decorations (a pot of variegated ivy); ironic in a place that used to be an iconically famous garden - the menu makes much of food being sourced within 25 miles, but steak knives come from Brazil - we elected to have coffee served in the library, but after an interminable wait this had to be chased up - library still had pre-lunch drinks, bowls of olives, etc on other tables Come on, Pig management. Some of us know what the standard should be. You can do better.”
“We stayed at the Village Pub and came to the PIG both nights for dinner. The second night was unplanned, but the food was just so good the first night that we couldn’t help but come back. The staff were more than accommodating finding us a table even though we hadn’t booked. The food was absolutely delicious, excellent cocktails and lovely staff. We’re already researching our next trip to one of the PIG hotels.”
