Slow Living, Seriously Done
Where chalky ridges, kitchen gardens and honest English wine conspire to slow you right down.
Perched high on the chalky ridges of West Sussex, THE PIG-in the South Downs is the kind of place that makes you forget your phone exists. Tucked into the hamlet of Madehurst, just four miles from the medieval splendour of Arundel, this flint-and-timber Georgian house is at once deeply rooted in its landscape and quietly, confidently itself. Cosy wagons and characterful rooms look out over rolling hills and the hotel's very own vineyard — a view that, over a morning coffee, feels almost unreasonably good.

“This was a birthday celebration and from the moment we checked-in, I was made to feel special. We were given complimentary bubbly drinks at dinner and a plate of birthday piggy fours. However, the outstanding issue for me was the way as a coeliac I was treated. Every single member of the restaurant staff was clearly aware and even before I asked, I was informed about any gluten issues. Normally I miss out on bread when my husband is offered fabulous home made bread…. This time a gluten free roll arrived without my asking. Even the shortbread which arrived with my post dinner coffee was gf. The staff are fabulous and this all made for a really special celebratory day. Well done Pig!!!!”
“Fabulous retreat, beatifully understated and peaceful. Food was lovely, tasty but not over the top. I would describe it a "earthy" (in a good way). I was surprised to see a hazy IPA beer on the menu and it made my evening as it was a tremendous one. Everyone was friendly and helpful. We stayed in a cabin/wagon which was so wonderfully peaceful and very luxurious with a fantastic outdoor (and indoor) proper rain shower with huge flow so really lived upto the name. Breakfast was very high quality with the same wonderful ingredients and attention to detail as dinner. The main house has a great view over a secluded valley. You feel like you have left the rat race for a while. We left so relaxed and peaceful and plan to return. Great for a romantic get away. Highly recommended!”
“My partner and I had a Sunday roast at the restaurant yesterday. The location was beautiful as was the interior of the restaurant. The food was absolutely incredible, by far the best roast dinner I have had in a restaurant. Unfortunately we felt that the service had a lot of room for improvement. Halfway through eating our roast dinner, I realised that it was meant to have come with Yorkshire puddings so I had to get the waiters attention (because we hadn't had a check back) to ask whether they were missing - they were. We eventually got them but this was near the end of the meal. We then asked if we could go for a cigarette before desert, the waiter took our order and said he would put it through when we came back. We came back in and the waiter was not visible. There was now a waitress on our section instead who proceeded to attend to all the other tables but did not come over to us, after 25 minutes I got her attention and explained that we had placed our desert order with the other waiter, this seemingly reminded her to put our order through. It was a lovely experience however this was slightly dampened by the service as we felt slightly ignored/forgotten.”
“I guess the service standards must fluctuate wildly, given all the reviews. It was good for our visit. The location is delightful and on the right weather day the comfort in the restaurant is great. Given it is a vast conservatory not sure how it would be on a hot sunny day. Food wise, nothing exceptional, not fine dining, but very nice - as you would expect given the prices! Wines are dreadfully overpriced. Oh, and whilst I'll usually pay it, I do not like the default 12.5% service charge. In total about £150 for two - two courses and half litre of "house" wine - their cheapest at just over £30! Too much really. We will not be going to the Pig again in a hurry. Eating out is interesting in a way, as we have just had fish and chips and a glass of wine in O'Neills for £9.95 each!”
“For our wedding last month, we stayed at The Pig in the South Downs. The staff were really accommodating and we couldn't have asked for a more beautiful place to stay for the weekend of our wedding. Thank you for all the lovely touches and for making us feel so welcome. A real highlight was the lunch on Sunday in the Garden Room. The food was so delicious, and it was the perfect setting to reflect on the wedding with our bridal party. Thanks again for such a memorable stay. We already can't wait to be back for an anniversary one day!”
