Small Pig, Big Character
Where ancient city walls cradle modern comfort and gloriously local food.
Tucked into the ancient medieval walls of Southampton like a well-kept secret, THE PIG-in the wall is the smallest and perhaps most charming member of the beloved PIG family. Just 90 minutes from London, this higgledy-piggledy little bolthole punches well above its modest footprint, offering the same rustic warmth the brand does so brilliantly — think reclaimed timber, low sofas, a crackling log burner and an atmosphere that makes you want to sink in and stay far longer than planned.
Rather than a full restaurant, THE PIG-in the wall trades in deli-dining done exceptionally well. Daily deliveries from THE PIG in the New Forest, just 20 minutes away, alongside Hampshire, Dorset and Isle of Wight producers, mean the menu shifts with the seasons and the larder. Deli salads, golden quiches, generously loaded sharing boards and those irresistible Piggy Bits arrive at rustic wooden tables with the kind of unfussy confidence that only real quality can afford. The drinks list, while compact, is perfectly curated — locally crafted ales and ciders rub shoulders with a Negroni or Espresso Martini that could hold their own anywhere in the city.
For food lovers seeking a characterful urban base on the south coast, this is a deeply satisfying choice. Step outside onto the terrace, glass in hand, with medieval stonework at your shoulder and the city humming gently around you, and you will understand exactly what makes this little Pig so special.

What They Say
“Lovely stay for one night. Pleasant and clean room. Nice little touches eg homemade local soap. Could not get a coffee at 10 pm (as they had cleaned the machine!) Coffee machine in room had no instructions but did not function fully as not enough water came through. Location was brilliant! Hotel was cosy and quiet. Had to pay £14 for overnight parking which is expensive. Should be complemtary. Cooked breakfast is £20. Had continental breakfast for £10.”
“** Bar only review ** I'd like to start by saying that I'm a big fan of the Pig in general. The food we had on this visit was lovely although arguable expensive for what it is, however this is something I don't usually mind as it is made up for by the high quality paired with what is normally fantastic service. This visit however was a big let down on that front. The coffee's were just not quite right they tasted as if the coffee had been burnt as it was poured, again something which I wouldn't mind if the service was high quality. Unfortunately our waitress seemed very miserable and rude throughout. Not a single smile, greeting, please or thank you throughout our time there. We had to clear the drinks off the table ourselves to make room for food which was then slammed rather forcefully onto the table. This made any encounter with the staff member feel rather tense and uneasy. I will supplement this with once again saying that 9/10 the pig is a fantastic place to visit, and I'm fully aware and understanding the staff member may just have been having a tough day. However it did none the less leave a bitter taste on my first visit to this particular pig and it makes me cautious to return.”
“Had a lovely little break staying and eating at the Pig-in the wall. Would highly recommend staying here close to the shopping, pubs restaurants. Food was fantastic so well worth coming in for a meal on its own. Staff are friendly and professional, excellent experience.”
“Stayed 2 nights here before it cruise and so happy with the choice. Absolutely lovely staff, amazing breakfast (not included), and a great room full of character and charm. When I compare it with the lifeless looking hotels around here this is the best pick. Superb location for trying to the cruise ship and restaurants and the old town too.”
“We have visited previously and service and drinks were good. However, the service wasn’t great this time of visiting. We went in for Xmas drinks and thought we would be staying for a few cocktails but the service wasn’t great below par. Waitress was miserable, no smile and no greeting and when we asked if she could make a cocktail off menu, you would have thought we asked her to let us have it for free. Needless to say we didn’t stay after the first drink. With the esteem of the Pig the service was way below expected”
