Star Quality in God's Own Country
Where Michelin magic meets moorland soul beneath a centuries-old thatch.
Tucked beneath a canopy of ancient thatch in the honey-stoned village of Harome, The Star Inn is one of those rare places that feels both utterly of its landscape and entirely exceptional within it. Andrew Pern has presided over this 14th-century inn for three decades now, and 2026 marks thirty years of his custodianship — a tenure that has earned the kitchen a Michelin star it has held with quiet, confident pride, and a place among the UK's top five gastropubs. This is Yorkshire hospitality at its most assured: rooted, generous, and never trying too hard to impress.
The food is the undeniable heart of the experience. Chef-Director Stephen Smith — named Yorkshire Life's Chef of the Year — steers seasonally driven menus that read like a love letter to the surrounding moors and hedgerows. Feathered game, foraged berries, produce plucked from the county's larder: every plate tells you exactly where you are. Choose between the tasting menu for a full narrative arc of flavour, or settle into the à la carte for something more leisurely. The wine list is worthy of the food it accompanies.
Stay the night — and you really should — at Cross House Lodge, just across the lane from the inn, where thirteen rooms have been carved from former farm buildings, stables and a characterful old wheelhouse. It is an arrangement that perfectly suits the spirit of the place: a little rustic, quietly luxurious, and impossible to leave in a hurry. Couples seeking a restorative escape to the North York Moors will find everything they need here, and then some.

What They Say
“We came ten days ago just after Christmas. We were very kindly put in the private area by the kitchen. All five of us had an absolutely brilliant meal, in fact I've never had a bad one here. The service is attentive but not over the top and a lovely touch being asked if we fancied a drink in the bar first. Food outstanding as always and such a lovely way to whirl away a few hours. We'll be back - hopefully very soon. Thank you.”
“I cannot say enough about this absolutely lovely Inn in the middle of the Yorkshire countryside. We knew that the Star Inn boasted a Michelin Star restaurant, but we did not expect such charming accommodations. Our rooms were cosy, comfortable and well appointed. Even better, the common rooms were so inviting that we just wanted to sit on a sofa around the fireplace, chat and have a glass of wine or two. The breakfast in the morning is served around a massive round table in a room that used to accommodate cattle. The owners love of game hunting is evidenced in the decor throughout. A very short walk across the street is the thatched roof pub and dining rooms for the restaurant. This is another place you want to spend considerable time and we did.We opted for the 11 course tasting menu. That may sound like a lot (I was a bit full for the sweets) but it was so well balanced and delicious that every bite felt like a journey I wanted to take. They even made perfect accommodations for my husband who is allergic to shellfish. If the tasting menu is not your thing, I am positive that their Ala-carte menu is superb. In fact, their cheese selection was incredible on its own. I cannot recommend this Inn and restaurant enough for any traveler who loves the countryside and the pleasures of fine dining.”
“We had a lovely time staying at The Star Inn for a night. We stayed in the barn and our room was spacious and clean. The staff were fantastic, very attentive, nothing was too much trouble. Sadly there was a very rowdy party in the dining area which did put a dampener on our night but the staff did all they could to ask them to be considerate of other diners and we were not charged for the wine we ordered which was very kind. We had the tasting menu, standout dishes were the gazpacho soup and foie gras but we found the menu very rich and heavy for a tasting menu. We would like to return but would order from the à la carte menu in future.”
“Outstanding food. Market menu is exceptional value for money and there are a range of beers and wines to suit all budgets. The extra cheese course £16 was well worth it. Excellent cheeses and yummy accompaniments.. we ate in the bar with our dog and appreciated the opportunity to visit. The octopus starter was amazing stand out dish for me, tried the magnum savoury dessert interesting flavours and presentation.”
“We had an overnight stay here with meal included. Absolutely stunning as per usual. Have been a few times and every time is an absolute treat. The food and wine is always spot on and the service is top. Sure, it's a place to go to as a treat but as treats go, it's up there. Would totally recommend staying the night for the extra cost to make the most of the bar.”
