Westleton, Suffolk
Where Suffolk Exhales
A coaching inn steeped in heathland calm, coastal light and the quiet art of doing nothing particularly well.
Tucked beside a quintessential Suffolk village green, The Westleton Crown is the kind of place that makes you wonder why you ever board a plane. This newly refurbished coaching inn wears its landscape like a second skin — interiors washed in the muted palette of heather, gorse, sea-bleached sand and steely East Anglian skies, the 34 bedrooms feeling less like hotel rooms and more like a natural extension of the AONB countryside that wraps itself around the building. Landscaped terraces spill outdoors for those golden al fresco evenings, and the bar and garden room hum with the kind of easy, unhurried warmth that Suffolk does better than almost anywhere.
At the heart of it all is the kitchen, where Head Chef Alex Henshaw leads a team quietly devoted to the art of honest, locally sourced cooking. Breakfast, a leisurely Sunday roast, or a candlelit supper with friends — each is prepared with genuine care rather than culinary theatre, the menus shifting with the seasons and the Suffolk larder. It is the sort of food that makes you linger long past the point of politeness, ordering just one more glass of something local.
For those travelling with four-legged companions, The Crown is something close to paradise — dog bedding, treats and a dedicated menu await, with miles of coastal heath and shoreline on the doorstep for windswept morning adventures before retreating to the bar. Families, weekend escapers and anyone craving the restorative quiet of the Suffolk Coast will find everything they need here, with Southwold just a short drive away for those who need a little salt air to complete the picture. Book sooner rather than later — word is very much out.

What They Say
“Highly recommended, our room was cosy and the ensuite had a really nice bath and shower. Breakfast was excellent and the evening meal was delicious. Service was very good. Location worked very well for us, being close to Minsmere RSPB, were we watched spectacular starling murmurations at dusk before checking in. The 8.5 mile suggested walk that included lunch at the Ship Inn at Dunwich, was full of interest and beauty.”
“On arrival, we had to wait a while for someone to come back to the desk. However, they were professional and pleasant when they appeared. They showed us to our room and check-in was efficient. The bedroom was adequate. The lights in the hall, on the landing and in the lower bedroom flickered, sometimes they went out completely and then flicker back on - this was mentioned at check-out. We used the side lights instead which was fine. There were another few points from the bedroom area upstairs: it had cobwebs hanging from the ceiling, the bath plug was too small and it would drain when knocked and the wall up the staircase had been painted a darker shade. These were some ‘even better ifs’ and didn’t affect our stay. The breakfast was good. The lady serving was pleasant. A good selection of cereals and juices were on offer. The full English was great. We had come to stay for my wife’s birthday. This was noted on the booking form and a follow-up email was sent during the week to confirm from me. Unfortunately, this wasn’t mentioned by staff. Like other establishments, a little message from management in the room would have been good or something said at check-in, making it a unique stay. Overall, a satisfactory stay with some ‘even better ifs’ which would have made our stay even better.”
“Good value pub hotel. The room was well thought out, with a comfy bed, good storage, lovely bathroom and bathroom products. We had an evening meal which was delicious (vegetarian). There was a good wine list. Breakfast was both continental, cereals and cooked. Staff were attentive. The location is excellent and we took a 12 mile round trip walk from the hotel to and around Minsmere. The overall stay was relaxing and just what we needed.”
“Excellent place to stay. Lovely atmosphere, food suburb. Staff friendly and professional. Clean and accommodating. Would have given 5 stars but didn't like the service charge levied for using the bar! Expected for the restaurant but not in the bar areas.”
“A pub hotel dating back to the 14 mtg century , very quirky with bags of character. Really warm & friendly welcome. Staff were all lovely. Room was comfortable & clean & we both slept well. The food was outstanding. We had lamb for dinner & it was the best we’ve ever eaten, breakfast was varied & hot food cooked to order.”
