Where History Lives in Luxury
An aristocratic Thames-side reverie that history itself could not have staged more perfectly.
Few hotels in Britain can claim a history quite as intoxicating as Cliveden House. Set within a breathtaking 365-acre estate above the River Thames in Berkshire, this magnificent aristocratic mansion has hosted royalty, scandal, and splendour in equal measure — and today, it invites discerning guests to step inside that legend. From the moment you cross the threshold, the weight of the Astor family's extraordinary heritage settles around you like a velvet cloak: suits of armour stand sentinel in grand hallways, gold-lashed dining rooms shimmer with candlelight, and the Thames glides serenely below manicured terraces that have scarcely changed in centuries.
Dining here is an event in itself. The Cliveden Dining Room offers cuisine worthy of the setting, while the Astor Grill provides a more relaxed but no less elegant alternative. For the quintessentially British experience, The Crown Afternoon Tea — crafted with elegance, tradition, and a distinctly Cliveden hand — is simply not to be missed. Accommodation ranges from opulent suites named for the house's most storied residents, including the Lady Astor Suite and the Prince of Wales Suite, to the enchanting Spring Cottage, a three-bedroom hideaway nestled within the grounds for those seeking something altogether more private.
Cliveden is, above all, a place for occasions that demand to be remembered. Whether you are celebrating a milestone, escaping with a beloved partner, or simply surrendering to a passion for history and beauty, this is a rare destination that exceeds every expectation the moment you arrive. Book the suite, order the afternoon tea, and linger on the Thames-side terrace until the light turns gold. You will not want to leave.

What They Say
“We had afternoon tea overlooking the beautiful garden and stayed the night. Don't be fooled. Afternoon tea looked sparse, but was endless. With cakes, sandwiches and teapots constantly being refilled. The house is picture perfect and immaculate. The spa facilities and swimming pools were spotless. Despite mini Christmas trees everywhere there was not a pine needle in sight! Breakfast is included in the price of the room and is certainly one of their best assets. Choose from Continental, Cooked or both. Cliveden House is definitely peaceful and luxurious. Staff were generally polite and friendly and obviously put in alot of effort and attention to detail. (There was a little blip, but it was quickly smoothed over by the lovely Nadine). Cliveden House has so much to offer, but strangely enough..... to me, there was something missing ........ Cliveden is either a 5 star* or its a 3 star. Visit and enjoy the luxury for yourself and you decide.”
“My wife and I have made it an annual tradition to come to Cliveden pre Christmas, however will not be returning after our experience in late 2025. This year the service has deteriorated quite badly. Firstly when we turned up there was nobody to greet us or help with bags or anything… not what you expect at a five star hotel charging a considerable amount per night. That was not the worst of it though. My wife asked to have a £100 voucher removed from the bill and the front desk staff convincingly told us it was included. After we got home we realised it hadn’t been removed and after several very time consuming emails back and forth this has now been sorted. They however extremely rudely (and I’m not sure if even legally) charged my card for a £20 facemask that apparently we used in our room (we didn’t). They just sent through a note telling us that they have charged us this without any sort of question and just took the money. We have spent weeks emailing to get this refunded and still no luck, so effectively they have stolen £20. Dinner service was ok, although it’s now extremely overpriced for what it is. We won’t be returning again next year after having all the issues and been charged for something we did not use. Incredibly petty after an extremely expensive night stay as it is.”
“Absolutely stunning location. We use Cliveden for our Xmas small group events, and it never fails to impress. The French Dining room is truly beautiful and brings the magic of Christmas to life. The staffing and service was flawelss, and the food was oustanding.”
“The most stunning place I have had the pleasure of staying at. Everything is 5 star here. The ground and views are incredible. Staff are kind and attentive. Could not find a fault, will return again and again.”
“Went to see Cliveden as part of the #national trust but got there at the wrong time. It is only open to the public national trust members/visitors between 11 and 1. Met the most amazing gentleman who told me I couldn’t enter unless staying in the hotel, using the restaurant or staying for afternoon tea. Did get the chance to have tea though, absolutely stunning setting with so much class. I’ll time in better next time. The grounds were amazing, but vast. Enjoyed the talk on the patio for a little bit. Enjoyed the maze and waterfalls. It is a beautiful park.”
