Ludlow, Shropshire
Shropshire's Most Seductive Escape
Where Georgian grandeur meets countryside calm, and dinner is always the main event.
Tucked into the rolling Shropshire Hills just beyond the medieval market town of Ludlow, Fishmore Hall is the kind of place that makes you wonder why you ever bothered with a passport. This beautifully restored Georgian country house, originally built as a private residence in the 18th century, wears its history lightly — honey-hued elegance at every turn, softened by genuinely warm staff who greet you as though you're an old friend rather than a booking reference. The views across the Shropshire countryside are the sort that stop conversations mid-sentence.
The Shell Spa is, by all accounts, something of a revelation. Treatments are thoughtfully tailored to each guest, and the signature Dip & Dine experience — pairing spa time with a seriously impressive tasting menu — is exactly the kind of indulgence a proper retreat demands. Sink into the hot tub as the hills fade to dusk, then let the kitchen do the rest. The chef, it seems, has a habit of exceeding expectations: the tasting menu has drawn comparisons to far grander establishments, with waiting staff who know their food and wine with genuine passion.
Ludlow itself lends Fishmore Hall an enviable sense of place — a town celebrated across Britain for its food culture and historic charm, all within easy reach when you can summon the will to leave. For couples seeking a restorative escape that delivers on every front — spa, scenery, and exceptional dining — this is a corner of England that richly rewards the detour.

What They Say
“It's easy to find this place, just on the outskirts of Ludlow, and the second time I have been there. I enjoyed a lovely a spa treatment and afternoon tea. The service is lovely. Thoroughly enjoyed the back massage. The staff are lovely and welcoming. Afternoon tea is immense, go hungry! I had to ask for takeaway boxes and enjoy the lovely sandwiches tray bakes and cakes at home!”
“Two course lunch had very limited choice but we enjoyed our roast and creme brulee. This was a spa deal for my daughter's birthday. We had a really relaxing afternoon. The spa was quiet so it felt like a private experience. Loved the outdoor hot tubs. The massage with Sophie was the best I've had in long time, definitely felt myself drifting away. Highly recommended. 😊”
“Stayed for my husbands birthday treat. Spent a morning in the spa which was fabulous. Nice outdoor hot tub, lovely massages. Had Sunday lunch in the dining hall and it was amazing. Beautiful roast dinner and lovely apricot cheesecake to follow. We stayed overnight in Room 1 which was huge. Separate lounge area, large bedroom and massive bathroom with walk in shower. We had breakfast which was plentiful, freshly cooked full English which was more than ample. We didn’t have room for the cereals, toast and croissants that were available along with fresh fruit. Staff were attentive and polite and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble. Looking forward to our next stay.”
“The team at fishmore Hall are great, attentive and knowledgeable. Felt really comfortable and at ease in the treatments and the facilities are wonderful we particularly enjoy that we have use of the spa to yourself meaning no waiting around for others to finish in the area you want to be in. Will be visiting again soon.”
“Absolutely lovely morning, everybody we dealt with was extremely pleasant and helpful. We had an hour treatment each then an hour in the spare facilities and then I light lunch, all of which were fantastic. Really made our weekend getaway. Kathryn and Julie”
