Where Windermere Works Its Magic
An Edwardian jewel on England's most romantic shoreline.
Perched on the very shores of England's largest natural lake, Langdale Chase is the kind of place that makes you understand, viscerally, why Turner kept returning to the Lake District with his easel. This Edwardian mansion has been welcoming guests since 1891, and following a sensitive restoration, it now offers what can only be described as laid-back luxury at its most assured — the sort of effortless elegance that never announces itself too loudly. Step through the doors and the outside world simply dissolves.
The setting is, frankly, unfair in its beauty. Windermere stretches out before you in every direction, and whether you're gazing from a panoramic bedroom suite, lingering over fine-dining dishes inspired by the Lake District coastline, or taking afternoon tea with the kind of unhurried ceremony it deserves, the water is always there — shimmering, shifting, insisting you slow down. The private jetty seals the romance entirely; from here, guests can embark on a boat trip aboard the Albatros, drifting across Windermere as the fells rise dramatically on either side.
For couples seeking a retreat that feels genuinely special rather than merely expensive, Langdale Chase delivers with quiet confidence. This is a place to do as much or as little as you wish — a glass of something chilled on the terrace, a long Sunday lunch, a walk into the hills and back again. With winter sale rates of up to 20% off lakeside breaks in 2026, there has never been a more compelling reason to book that table for two.

What They Say
“I cannot put into words how amazing our stay and the team at the Langdale Chase, but I will try. When I booked our stay I told the hotel ahead of time that I was planning to propose to my girlfriend and they did everything in their power to make the weekend as memorable as possible, both on the run up to our trip and whilst we were there. From helping me arrange wonderful flowers before we arrived, to sneaking into our room to put those flowers in and running my fiancé a bath before we arrived back from dinner. Truly, everything was perfect. Beyond that, the room was amazing, giant bed, standalone mason bath, and a breathtaking view looking right out onto Lake Windermere. Unfortunately, we didn’t have dinner at the hotel, but the cocktail lounge/bar was superb, we drank until the late hours enjoying our drinks and the open fire. All in all, I cannot recommend the Langdale Chase enough. Thank you again to Dean and the team, you guys were amazing!”
“It was a really lovely experience. The lake felt different from summer to winter, each season offering its own way of being on the lake. Many thanks to Rob and Pete for their warmth and professionalism. This visit really felt like coming home. Thanks to everyone for being so welcoming — I’m already hoping to plan a third visit soon.”
“We had a lovely stay. Went on the albetros cruise this time and it was a fabulous experience. Even in the chilly January weather the blankets and champagne kept us warm. Rob and Pete were fabulous boat men. The service at breakfast was a little chaotic and slow but we had a lovely stay.”
“I recently had the pleasure of enjoying an afternoon tea for two at Langdale Chase, and it was such a lovely experience. The building is gorgeous, with lots of charm, and the grounds are perfect for a stroll after your tea. The food was fantastic, with a great mix of savoury bites followed by some indulgent sweets. Some of the desserts were a bit on the rich side, so they might not be for everyone, but everything was beautifully presented and really tasty. The service was spot on—friendly, attentive, and just made the whole experience feel relaxed and special. My only small note is that the tea and coffee selection could’ve been a bit more varied, as we were just given what was served, rather than having a choice. But honestly, it didn’t take away from the overall experience! All in all, a brilliant spot for a classic afternoon tea. Great food, stunning setting, and top-notch service. Would definitely recommend!”
“Let’s start with the bottom line - would we go again? The answer is yes! I first went to the Langdale Chase in 1985, loved it, and have been many times since. However, it was sold to a brewery company/hotel group a few years ago, received major, necessary refurbishment, and this was our first visit since. What would be our experience of the renewed hotel, and what would our final account be? We held our breath. The location overlooking Windermere is without equal. The views from many rooms, and from the restaurant, are outstanding. We arrived late afternoon, parked outside the main entrance, and found smiling staff coming out to greet us by name. They had done their homework! We were told our baggage would be taken to our room and the car parked, while we were given a conducted trip of the refurbished premises, and a glass of champagne. The central feature of the building, the panelled baronial hall with minstrels’ galleries, is basically unchanged. The new decor lightens much of the room whilst most panelling remains. The old piano lounge is now the bar, modernised, and ornate. The restaurant area is increased by incorporating the old verandah bar. We used to have a room with a sitting area in a turret, from where one gained a view up and down the lake. Now, it is called a suite! It was beautiful, as spacious as ever, with a very comfortable bed. The restaurant is such a vital part of a hotel, and we found the Langdale Chase faultless in this respect. We particularly enjoyed the crab salad starter, the halibut and the ribeye steaks. But it’s a lot more expensive, even with 20% reduction on the winter offer, than in the past. Personally, we feel it is fair value for an excellent hotel experience. Congratulations to Mike Vincent, who has managed the transformation from its earliest days, and to his excellent team.”
