Little Mill in Abergavenny, Wales — Converted Cornmill

Abergavenny, Wales

Where Old Mills Meet Wild Wales

Seventeen centuries of stone, one river, and the sweetest kind of silence.

Tucked beside the murmuring River Gavenny on the edge of the Brecon Beacons, Little Mill is the kind of place that makes you wonder why you ever bothered with abroad. Two 17th-century cornmills — Felin and Maen Melin — have been given a second life here, their ancient stone bones now dressed in pared-back interiors that manage to feel both effortlessly stylish and genuinely lived-in. Stone sinks catch the morning light, wooden bunks invite the sort of deep, dreamless sleep that only countryside air can deliver, and luxury bedding softens every rustic edge. It is, in the best possible way, a place that hasn't tried too hard.

For a gathering of up to eleven, the two cottages combine into one wonderfully generous retreat — big enough for a multigenerational family or a group of friends who've been promising each other a proper escape for years. The grounds are stunning, the peace is profound, and Abergavenny — one of Wales's most beloved market towns — is just close enough to feel convenient without ever intruding on the stillness.

This is the farm-girl aesthetic done with genuine conviction: honest materials, thoughtful restraint, and the kind of quiet beauty that photographs well but feels even better in person. Book both cottages, arrive with good wine and muddy boots, and stay longer than you planned. You will.

✨ Abergavenny Gem: Truly Unforgettable Stay! ✨ From the moment we arrived, this hotel captured the spirit of hospitality at its finest. The rooms were spotless, stylish, and spacious. The staff? Warm, attentive, and genuinely passionate about making your stay special. It felt more like staying with friends than just booking a room. If you’re visiting Abergavenny, do yourself a favour—stay here. It’s not just a place to sleep; it’s part of the experience.

A Thursday December evening some people in but fairly quiet for such a large venue. This is a Brains establishment. The place looks clean and modern (other than the carpet in the restaurant - needs replacing). A small party was in attendance for their Christmas event so service was a little slow. Staff were very pleasant & the meals were much better than your usual Brains establishment (at a higher price but fair). The duck salad starter was superb.

Restaurant very quiet with a party of 30 due in, got there early to make sure we ordered at the time we had agreed yet meals were all out at different times, steaks over cooked to the point of not edible. My middle daughter waited 30 minutes after the 1st meal was brought for her food. Service was a disaster and for a pub that I have visited many times I can safely say it’s my last. God help the party of 30 as they couldn’t get our table of 7 right!

I was running late and taking my father out for Sunday lunch last minute. So we chose the Plas Derwen as it looks nice from the outside. We went in and they said they had stopped serving as they had a party of 30 in. Then they said they would take our order so we expected to wait a bit. As we walked into the conservatory dining area they carpet was so dirty it was sticky and black. The table was sticky and at this point I nearly left but my father said he was ok to order. We ordered and the food took 40 minutes. The food was average, I just hope the kitchen is cleaner than the rest of the place. I could not recommend and would not go back. My father's chair had stuck to the carpet whilst he had lunch. Shame the place looks nice from the outside.
