Devon's Most Romantic Clifftop Retreat
Where the English Riviera meets timeless manor-house grace
Perched above the glittering coastline of Torquay, Orestone Manor is the kind of Devon retreat that reminds you why the English Riviera earned its romantic nickname. This handsome manor house blends country-house elegance with the soul-stirring drama of the sea, offering guests a sanctuary that feels both timeless and deeply personal. With a remarkable 4.8 out of 5 rating, it is clear that this is a property that consistently delivers on its considerable promise.
For couples seeking a coastal escape with genuine atmosphere, Orestone Manor offers something rather special: private balconies that frame the sweeping Devon views like a living painting. Whether you are sipping morning coffee as the mist lifts from the bay or watching the sun dissolve into the horizon at dusk, these private outdoor spaces transform a simple stay into something quietly extraordinary. The great views are not merely a selling point — they are an experience in themselves, shifting and shimmering with every passing hour.
At a mid-range price point, Orestone Manor punches well above its weight, delivering the romance and refinement of a classic English manor without demanding the extravagance of a grand hotel. It is the ideal bolthole for couples craving coastal beauty, gentle luxury, and the unhurried pleasure of Devon life done properly.

What They Say
“Please be aware: I'm going to be thorough. Arriving from the north there was a very sharp hairpin bend to take you down to Orestone Manor (with slightly dated signage). No problem with ample parking spaces but the area could've done with a little TLC, especially as it's a 4Star establishment. Frontage was pleasant but slightly spoilt by clutter of signage and barriers. Reception was excellent (friendly, personable, professional and informative), as were the attitudes of other staff we met on the way to our room. Please don't get me wrong, everything was fine, but, it's just starting to edge into the "tired" zone with alot of pointless/uninspiring hanging pictures around the place. The room was at the top of the building, lovely views, peaceful and comfortable, though again a neither/neither (and a few too many signs around~ maybe just keep them in the welcome book). Again, all staff seemed friendly and good at their job, but let down by basics...like...breakfast. Each step was adequate, again, not what I'd expect from 4☆. Everything is done in miniature: half size croissants, cheap jams, twice cooked sausage and streaky bacon, half a small tomato and half a mushroom and small sliced toast (O.J and coffee both on the cheap side). Unfortunately we missed out on an evening meal, I would've liked to experience what was on offer. Overall either a great 6/10 or a disappointing 7/10 and I apologise, but please bear in mind, this is only 1 persons review. It really is a great location, especially for peace and tranquility and it could easily be elevated (without much effort).”
“We were fortunate to go for lunch here on Christmas day Amazing food service and welcome. A definate 10 out of 10 our guest was very impressed too. Similar to rheir Sunday lunch but with far far more not surprise people return year after year.”
“Visited the terrace conservatory overlooking the gardens for an afternoon tea, giving excellent views across the gardens and out to sea, it was nice and quiet and were welcomed and seated by the windows... The service was excellent, friendly attentive staff who looked after us. We didn't have to wait long after our tea was brought out, the selection of sandwiches, cakes and scones were delicious. You can even choose your finger sandwich flavours ( we didn't like coronation chicken ) One thing I would have liked was a choice of teas however the tea was unlimited and we had a fresh pot halfway through our cakes! I liked the fresh strawberries touch. £25 per head ( Sept 25 ) was good value and the food quality was very good...with one exception - the scones themselves. They were dry and would have been better warmed but there was lashings of jam and clotted cream to compensate. There is a large terrace and lounge for all visitors to enjoy, there wasn't a hint of being rushed which was fantastic. I could have lounged around all afternoon. Would definitely recommend, didn't stay over but they do have 14 guest rooms, a cost bar and holiday accommodation.”
“I've been sent an email by OYO to write this review, so I am, as requested! I am curious as to what Orestone Manor choose to do with this review, as I have noticed that they can get a little defensive on any review that isn't glowing. We had a somewhat mixed experience at Orestone Manor. To begin with the good, the rooms (we booked numerous rooms for a bridal party) were all lovely and clean and the food was excellent. However, we had some quite bizarre and, dare I say, unpleasant dealings with the receptionist (I shall not name them for the sake of their privacy, but I can give a name should the hotel be interested). They were very abrupt in manner, particularly with me (The Bride!!), saying something to the effect of "oh, bridal parties are just so difficult to deal with" (please hold in mind that we had spend thousands to stay here and I had not done anything wrong at all at this point except show up). There are more examples of this sort of thing but I don't feel particularly comfortable with shaming the person online (again, these details can be provided). Suffice to say, this was a pretty big knock to my confidence and happiness just before my wedding, hence the lukewarm review. I note this is not the first review that has called into question the behaviour of reception staff. I'm not saying don't stay here, but just be prepared for a slightly different welcome to what you're used to! Edit: Despite being asked for the review by the hotel, they have not made any contact with me to discuss the above mentioned concerns. That, in itself, is concerning.”
“Really lovely place. We found an offer they had on for dinner, breakfast and stay with a hot tub and so glad we decided to go for it. It was a gem of a place. The coach house was spotless and the hot tub with a view was lovely. The hotel was decorated so nicely and the food was incredible. Would definitely viait again!”
