Kelso, Scottish Borders
Scotland's Most Seductive Escape
Where championship fairways, candlelit cellars and a heated infinity pool conspire to make home feel very far away.
Tucked into the rolling countryside of the Scottish Borders, Schloss Roxburghe is the kind of place that makes you wonder why you ever bothered with a passport. This Destination by Hyatt estate — just over an hour from Edinburgh — unfurls across manicured grounds with the quiet confidence of somewhere that has nothing left to prove. Choose your retreat: 20 individually designed rooms in the storied Historic Manor, where centuries of history are woven into every cornice and curtain; 58 sleek contemporary suites in the Estate House, with views that stretch across the grounds like a painting; or one of 51 self-catering cottages, nestled privately in the estate's embrace for those who prefer their luxury with a little more breathing room.
The centrepiece of any stay, however, is the 600-square-metre spa and its heated outdoor infinity pool — a genuinely theatrical place to spend a Scottish afternoon, especially when the mist is rolling across the fairways of the championship golf course beyond. Golfers will find the course an absorbing test of skill wrapped in scenery that is nothing short of cinematic. Back inside, the dining is anchored by an almost obsessive commitment to home-grown estate produce: vegetables harvested from the kitchen gardens arrive on your plate with a freshness that supermarket provenance can only dream of.
Multiple accolades — including a five-star AA rating and Scotland's Best Hotel Spa 2025 — confirm what a single evening here makes abundantly clear: Schloss Roxburghe is not merely a hotel. It is an argument, and a thoroughly convincing one, for never leaving Scotland at all.

What They Say
“Had a brilliant stay in one of the cottages at Schloss a few weekends ago. From arrival (with a lovely tour from Philip) to check out we experienced excellent, friendly service, in particular from the staff in the tea room and at the spa. We had afternoon tea and were given a lovely surprise of fizz to mark our special occasion. The spa was brilliant, they are aware there can be a problem with it being very busy, but it was clearly explained in our booking confirmation for the cottage that spa access was separate and wasn't guaranteed. On speaking to staff, this is something they are working on,however we had no problem by planning our arrival at spa quickly after check in, and not reserving beds when we didn't plan to use them. The saunas and plunge pool were amazing. The cottage was so comfortable and spotless, and we loved our breakfast from the shop. A fantastic stay in beautiful surroundings.”
“The facilities, room and service are all excellent and i wish i could have given the hotel 5 stars. We arrived on a Friday for 2 nights and everything was superb fri lunchtime to Sat Lunchtime. The problems with the stay started from that point. The hotels facilities are unable to cope with the number of guests staying on a Saturday night. We visited the Spa on Sat afternoon and was told there are no beds or even chairs available and we were to come back at 6pm. I understand that there is a capacity in the Spa but when you are paying close to £400 a night, and staying in the castle itself, you would expect to be accommodated in the Spa, its one of the main reasons for staying at the hotel. I suspect the multiple large Hen groups staying in the Cottages contributed to the problem. Breakfast on Sunday AM was very chaotic, queues at the entrance and at each station. Coffee arrived 20mins after eating. Again, for £400 per night i don't think being seating on a table with a queue of people standing around you waiting for eggs is appropriate. The two nights were like night and day, Fri was excellent, sat was a bit of a disaster. I would have no problem recommending the hotel for a weekday stay, but would 100% recommend staying away from the place on a weekend. More needs to be done ensure consistancy of expereince thoughout the weekend.”
“Overall service was very very poor. Our bedroom was located directly above the bins, and throughout our stay we could hear bottles being emptied into them, which was quite disruptive. The TV in the room was extremely slow, and the remote control didn’t work at all. On a positive note, lunch in the bar was really tasty. However, our dinner experience was very disappointing. We were seated at 8:30pm and placed our order around 8:40pm. After waiting 45 minutes for our starter, we were then told that the main dish we had chosen was unavailable. It was frustrating that this wasn’t communicated at the time of ordering. To make matters worse, when we received the bill, we noticed an additional £80 charge for the original main we never received. The attention to detail was extremely poor. We also spoke to the couple beside us, who mentioned they had waited an hour and a half for their meal. Overall, although the rooms were nice, the service let the hotel down significantly. Based on our experience, I wouldn’t rate it any higher than a three-star hotel.”
“I travel for work as a lone female and this is one of the best locations and hotels I have stayed in. Attentive staff that are genuinely happy to help you. Molten brown toiletries, the whole place smells divine. The spa is tranquil, not over crowded and spotlessly clean with all amenities stocked up. I stayed in room 210, with heated floors, a heated towel radiator - and a rain shower. In room climate control fully functional as I like my room warm. The Spa is the place to be to relax, rewind and be at peace. Pool is lovely and warm. Highly recommend and have stayed here twice.”
“Second visit here and just as amazing as the first. The staff are very friendly and go out of their way to make you feel welcome and looked after. A special mention to the chef, who not only served an incredible gluten-free sticky toffee pudding, but also kindly shared the recipe with my partner after she mentioned how much she loved it. Can’t wait to return!”
