Masham, North Yorkshire
Castle Grandeur in God's Own County
Where Yorkshire stone, four-poster dreams and Michelin-starred feasts conspire to make the world outside disappear.
Anchored in the rolling edge of the Yorkshire Dales, Swinton Park is the kind of place that makes the very idea of leaving the country feel faintly absurd. This 17th-century castle, the ancestral seat of the Earl of Swinton and privately owned by the Cunliffe-Lister family since the 1880s, sits within a staggering 20,000-acre estate — a landscape so commanding it seems designed to recalibrate the soul. Check in, sink into a four-poster bed, and let the ancient stone walls do the rest.
For those who travel on their appetite, Swinton Park delivers on every count. Michelin-starred dining ensures that evenings are occasions to savour, while the celebrated cookery school invites guests to roll up their sleeves and get properly acquainted with the craft behind the plate. It is a rare hotel that nourishes both the palate and the mind, and rarer still that it does so against a backdrop this theatrical.
Perfect for couples seeking a romantic retreat or dedicated foodies chasing their next great meal, Swinton Park is not merely a place to stay — it is a place to be utterly absorbed. With 200 acres of parkland to explore before breakfast and candlelit turrets to retreat to after dinner, a weekend here feels less like a staycation and more like a small, magnificent lifetime.

What They Say
“Low Swinton Cottage - Swinton Estate. Marketed as a luxury hotel, but in reality it delivers an Airbnb experience — no room service, no minibar, no housekeeping, and little sense of actually staying in a hotel. One half-expects to be asked to take the bins out. The hotel was busy for Burns Night, yet service suffered noticeably. Staff were lovely and clearly overworked, holding things together with charm rather than support. Food was decent, though both of our wine choices were unavailable, which felt on-brand. Breakfast was terrible. £35 for something that a Toby Carvery would be ashamed of. No pastries left, no juices, no toast left. Bacon so overcooked it resembled shoe leather. The spa was the low point. My wife’s facial was handled so poorly it caused skin damage, followed by towels so hot she had to end the session early. Management showed no real interest afterward. Swinton has great staff and plenty to do, but compared with other luxury estate hotels in the region, it lacks the polish and refinement its luxury label suggests. A clear case of aspirations above capabilities.”
“Called for afternoon tea which was delightful. Lovely home made sandwiches and pastries, in a wonderfully relaxing bow shaped room. The staff were attentive and very helpful. My only slight niggle was that I would have preferred a fruit scone, but the plain was light and fluffy anyway. I’ll hopefully return for a proper stay with the hounds in the near future. Can highly recommend it as a special treat and well worth the money.”
“Afternoon tea for 16 in a private roo., followed by a walk through the light show. Absolutely fantastic, from start to finish. Located close to Masham in stunning grounds, staff and service were great, and afternoon tea exactly as you would expect. Light show was a nice walk, but they should have discouraged us taking a wheelchair round it. That bit was definatley a bad idea.”
“Fabulous accommodation and location. Complimentary activities for guests are very worthwhile and a fabulous idea. Really enjoyed these. Only thing that let's the place down is the choice of food especially the Terrace cafe restaurant. Strange selection of food and expensive for what it was. Small portions. This is geared more for country club visitors and not residential guests. Staff at the estate are friendly.”
“We stayed here for two nights after Christmas. Wonderful experience. Staff excellent, spa was perfect and overall a great place to relax. Thoroughly recommend!”
