A Star Shines in the Dales
Where centuries of warmth meet the quiet thrill of a Michelin table.
Tucked into the folds of the Yorkshire Dales, The Angel Inn at Hetton is one of those rare places that feels both utterly rooted in its landscape and quietly, confidently exceptional. The 15th-century inn has been reimagined with considerable flair — its converted barn rooms offering a seductive blend of rustic warmth and genuine luxury, where stone walls and soft lighting conspire to make the outside world feel gloriously irrelevant. This is the kind of place you arrive at and immediately start planning your return.
The dining room, now bearing a coveted 2025 Michelin Star under chef Michael Wignall, is reason enough to make the journey. Wignall's cooking is precise, creative and deeply satisfying — the sort of meal that lingers in the memory long after the last course. And because you're staying the night, you can surrender entirely to the wine list without a thought for the drive home. Breakfast, when it comes, feels like a well-earned reward after morning air on the surrounding fells.
The Angel rewards those who seek out the quietly extraordinary. Couples will find it impossibly romantic; walkers will appreciate the direct access to some of England's most beautiful countryside; and dedicated food lovers will want to linger over every menu, every carefully sourced ingredient, every small and considered detail — right down to the inn's own signature home fragrances and the (currently sold-out) Michael Wignall Cotton Gin. Book now, and book well in advance.

What They Say
“We had the tasting menu pre Christmas. Love the interior very cozy with the wood burning stove. Would have given it 5* but as a vegetarian the 7 courses lacked diversity of texture and flavor, I felt that this menu was curated by a meat eater. Only slightly disappointed. My dad had the meat and fish and said it was incredible.”
“Excellent service from start to finish. Staff were very warm, welcoming and efficient. Sat in the bar and had an amazing cheeseboard with olives and nuts, walnuts bread and crackers. The cheeseboard came with a booklet explaining where they were made and what to expect flavour wise. We had cocktails and other alcoholic beverages and had a very lovely experience. My mother had got a voucher as a gift and wanted to take us. I would highly recommend. The decor is very tasteful and the fire was lit. We will definitely be back.”
“The Angel at Hetton is an outstanding dining experience. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, the service attentive without being intrusive, and the food is simply exceptional — beautifully presented and full of flavour. Every course feels thoughtfully crafted. A perfect place for a special meal and easily one of the best culinary spots in the area”
“Our second stay, wonderful once again. The rooms in the main building are stylish and comfortable, with beautiful joinery, though severely lacking in surface areas so it’s challenging to put anything down except on the floor! However, one comes for the food and warmth of welcome, and neither disappoints. The 10-course menu comprises course after beautiful course of top ingredients prepared with great skill, imagination and a strong Japanese influence and service throughout is warm and professional. The bar area still attracts a local crowd who come to enjoy a drink and sometimes stay on for a superb meal. Breakfast is no less enjoyable, with familiar elements given a ‘fine dining’ feel. Michael Wignall is a modest man with huge skill who has honed his talent in the UK’s top kitchens; we love that he now has somewhere to offer his vision of good food and hospitality.”
“Delicious food and a wonderful experience but I review based upon the price range. Clearly the food is great but few courses missed the mark. The carrot course being far too complex to fit the entire flavour onto a fork, other courses being unremarkable but the eel was absolutely incredible. Service, overall good but unfortunately some of the courses were explained too fast then instantly walked away before any questions could be asked. Sommelier was excellent. I went to the bathroom and returned to see my napkin on the floor. The breakfast was incredible, attentive service and a breakfast set menu is something I never knew I needed in my life. Plugs on one side of the bed but not the other is annoying but the bed was extremely comfortable. Overall, I would recommend and we will likely go back but for equivalent price point I’ve experienced elsewhere it needs work.”
