Radical Goodness in Rural Devon
Where organic ethics and veg-forward cooking conspire to make you never want to leave.
Totnes has long worn its radical credentials with pride, and The Bull Inn is the town's most delicious expression of that spirit. Organic, ethical and gloriously unpretentious, this nine-room pub-with-rooms sits at the heart of Devon's most free-thinking market town, drawing in travellers who want their staycation to mean something. The rooms are cosy and thoughtfully stripped back — no televisions to break the spell — inviting you instead to sink into the particular pleasure of simply being somewhere worth being.
The real draw, though, is the food. The kitchen operates a veg-first philosophy with a daily-changing menu that puts the seasons firmly in charge, producing small plates that feel quietly revelatory — the kind of cooking that makes you reconsider what a pub meal can be. Organic wines pour freely, the crowd is convivial, and the whole place hums with the easy confidence of somewhere that has absolutely nothing to prove.
For couples seeking a weekend that feels restorative rather than performative, or for food lovers tired of menus that never change, The Bull delivers something increasingly rare: genuine character, a conscience, and a kitchen firing on all cylinders. Book a room, surrender your phone signal to the Devon hills, and let Totnes do the rest.

What They Say
“Really lovely staff. Wildly appreciative of how kind and easygoing everyone is. Absolutely perfect place to bring a rescue dog, they totally understood, and were really supportive with a few members having rescues themselves and within a day our dog had settled. Can't wait to come back! Food is lovely at the bull inn but had an absolutely childish love affair with the pizza place the Albatross over the way. The pizzas are now my favourite ever, would eat the bread on its own, and the tiramisu was amazing.”
“Food is always good here - Riverford ingredients well executed. Unfortunately the waitress serving the walk-in tables was aloof and clearly felt the job she was doing was below her. In fact we felt very little warmth from the whole team - no smile on welcome or a goodbye despite eye contact and the floor not being overly busy. Not what you expect from Totnes and when you live and breathe hospitality yourself! Hope they’ll review.”
“My family and I were visiting our son who is now living in Plymouth. Dining at The Bull Inn Totnes was a “must do” for our trip, and it was an exceptional experience that truly sets a new standard for organic, ethical, and seasonal dining. This was my son’s third time and my second time, and we were so impressed that we had to bring the family so they could experience The Bull Inn for themselves. Our dinner was outstanding; the service was impeccable, and our night was filled with nothing but love and laughter. You can quickly tell by the vibe that The Bull Inn is a creation of love, where strong ethics are seamlessly integrated without overshadowing the quality and enjoyment of the food. We found The Bull Inn to be a place where you can indulge in an exceptional meal and drinks while feeling good about the positive impact of your choices. I highly recommend The Bull Inn for anyone who is looking for a truly memorable dining experience that will fill you with nothing but goodness (in your belly and in your soul).”
“We came here as my mum had been here in the past and she really liked it. Unfortunately it didn’t live up to expectations. The food was luxury pub dining I would say, quite inventive dishes, I would just say too much sauce in the fillet of fish as it overpowered the dish. The potatoes were delicious. The salad was more like leaves with vinegar, quite big leaves so hard to eat ‘elegantly’. Dog friendly which was a plus. Not the Pub’s fault but it’s nearly impossible to find parking nearby. We came on a Saturday, we spent half an hr looking for space. But it is very central location in heart of Totness. The biggest let down was the service. We had three waiters asking if we want water, none of which came back with one. No one bothered to explain that the menu is on a huge board (bring reading glasses), which I was waiting for. I could not read the writing at all. It was very hard to get waiters’ attention, we asked for the bill which never came so we went to the bar to pay. We weren’t happy to pay the excessive service charge.”
“Haven't stayed as a guest, this review is about the food. I have to visit the Bull every time I go to Totnes. Always lovely; yes, plates are small but excellent, concentrated quality; the true value of the experience is in savouring the feel and fragrance of everything. Unusual wines with the right plates are 🥰 unreal x”
