The Devonshire Arms in Bolton Abbey, North Yorkshire — Country House Hotel

Bolton Abbey, North Yorkshire

Where the Dales Come Alive

History, heather and heart — a Yorkshire escape that stays with you long after you leave.

Nestled at the gateway to the vast 30,000-acre Bolton Abbey Estate in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, The Devonshire Arms is that increasingly rare thing: a hotel that feels genuinely rooted in its landscape. This handsome stone coaching inn carries centuries of history in its walls, yet inside you will find four-poster beds dressed in rich fabrics, log fires crackling in the reception, and a spa with a hydrotherapy pool framed by elegant arched windows — comfort and character in perfect equilibrium. It is the kind of place that makes you exhale the moment you arrive.

The kitchen takes its responsibilities to the surrounding land seriously, with menus built around locally sourced produce that shift with the seasons — from lazy afternoon teas to long Sunday lunches that demand a restorative walk along the River Wharfe afterwards. And what walks they are. Ancient priory ruins, sweeping moorland, grand stone bridges reflected in clear water: the estate offers a landscape that feels almost improbably beautiful, waiting just beyond the front door.

For couples seeking a retreat that feeds the soul as much as the senses, or food lovers in search of a dining destination worth the journey, The Devonshire Arms delivers with quiet, unhurried confidence. This is Yorkshire at its most seductive — wild and refined all at once. Book it before someone else does.

What They Say

Me and my friend had afternoon tea here. The garden room was stunning and we loved the plants everywhere. Afternoon tea was absolutely perfect. Everything was such good quality and fresh. Even the tea selection was impressive. Service was impeccable . I loved there was a section for dogs with a fire! Absolutely would come back.

Me and my better half went for her birthday. The team at the Devonshire Arms went above and beyond to make sure it was unforgettable. The view from the room was unbelievable. The service we received was better than anything we've ever had, the manage Conor Byrne couldn't have been more helpful, and also the manage of the brasserie Jack Swarbrick couldn't have done more for us and the food was absolutely incredible. We will 100% be visiting again!

This is such a fabulous dog-friendly hotel in the most beautiful countryside. What stood out for me, even more than the stunning scenery, was the friendliness and charm of the staff, especially the lovely dark haired woman who serves breakfast, and the young, super-friendly team who helped her. The food was great, the rooms comfortable although the bathrooms were a bit cramped, and the dog friendliness of the place second to none. We will definitely be back, we just might book a bigger room next time to get a better bathroom.

We have just stayed for 2 nights and there is absolutely nothing they could have done better. The fabulous welcome, the log fires, the 4 poster beautifully comfortable bed and lovely breakfast and dinner. Every single member of staff was smiling and welcoming. We walked by the river, read our books by the log fire and totally relaxed. We will definitely be returning ASAP.

Beautiful, charming hotel. We stayed as part of a corporate event. The rooms were lovely and had great little touches like the tea/coffee station with home made flapjacks. We had food which was all delicious and service fantastic. The breakfast was great, all the various choices we ate as a group received great feedback. The staff were all very friendly, super helpful and made sure everything was as we needed it. The spa was nice and we had various lovely relaxing treatments. The area and grounds are beautiful, would definitely recommend getting out and exploring if you're able to. I'd absolutely recommend staying here.
