Devon's Most Delicious Secret
Where the Tamar Valley meets three AA Rosettes and mornings worth savouring slowly.
Perched on the Devon-Cornwall border with sweeping views across the Tamar Valley towards Kit Hill and Bodmin Moor, The Horn of Plenty is one of those rare discoveries that makes a staycation feel genuinely special. This independently owned four-star country house hotel has been quietly perfecting the art of hospitality for nearly six decades, and it shows — in the warmth of the staff, the hush of the gardens, and the sense that the outside world has been left agreeably far behind. Most rooms feature private balconies where birdsong and rolling countryside replace the morning alarm, and the five acres of grounds offer the kind of restorative stillness that no city spa can replicate.
The real jewel, however, is the restaurant. Holder of three AA Rosettes and a cornerstone of Devon's fine dining scene for close to 60 years, the kitchen transforms local, seasonal produce into menus that are quietly, confidently exceptional. Whether you linger over lunch, indulge in afternoon tea, or settle in for a long, candle-lit dinner with the Tamar Valley glowing beyond the windows, this is food that will be talked about on the drive home — and long after.
With a guest rating of 4.6 out of 5 and a price point that sits comfortably in the mid-range for the quality on offer, The Horn of Plenty punches well above its weight. Couples seeking a romantic retreat, dedicated foodies chasing a serious kitchen, and even four-legged companions — all are welcomed with equal grace. Book a room with a balcony, order the tasting menu, and surrender entirely.

What They Say
“I wanted to take my Wife somewhere special for a 65th Birthday Meal and I definitely found it. From Start to finish it was lovely. The Receptionist was very welcoming and informative, we had called earlier to say we were going to be late due to the Tavistock roadworks and were told not to worry and she would inform the Staff. We were shown to our table by Ellen who was a great Waitress and Host. The View from the table out the window was beautiful, even though it was raining, the table was set so we could both look out the window. The Prawn Starter was Excellent. The Turkey Main Course was also Excellent and more on the plate than we thought there would be. One point to make would be that it could have been a bit hotter. The Christmas Pudding Desert was a bit disappointing (another Point was that the Custard was poured onto the pudding in front of us without being asked). The Younger Waitress was a bit rude when myself and my wife were talking with our heads close together and she asked if she could take the plates away and reached between us whilst we were still talking instead of going round the table to collect the plates, trivial but a little disappointing by the standards Ellen had set. Another point was that a Service Charge was added to the Bill automatically without us being asked or informed. We wouldn't have paid the Service Charge because of the points being raised. Overall a great experience and meal, we will be coming back. EDIT: Thank you for the reply Owner. What about the Added Service charge?”
“We recently had our wedding here and I just want to thank Shirna and all her staff that were involved in making our day truely special. We count ourselves very lucky to have been married in such a lovely hotel, set in such beautiful surroundings. All the food was wonderful throughout our stay, and we are also very grateful to the chef for arranging the rice dishes for a more Filipino friendly breakfast. You were all fantastic and I have no doubt we'll be seeing you again on our anniversary.”
“Always amazing food and great service in such a nice atmosphere and location. Food is always presented beautifully and the chefs obviously appreciate and love what they do because the food is exceptional and every course has a distinct unique experience that makes you want more. The wine selection is also great so all that’s left is to have a few cognac’s .. 5*”
“Lovely atmosphere tables are well spaced out, staff were attentive without being intrusive. Food was beautiful, not only to look at but also to eat wonderful flavours and to top it all fantastic views as you eat.”
“We had the most magical day at The Horn of Plenty. Shirna made the initial planning to our big day an absolute dream. We had a micro wedding , planned in just two months. The venue is beautiful, the staff so professional, friendly and accommodating. The food was incredible. I can't thank everyone enough for making our special day so perfect.”
